Javion Magee Obituary, Death: Black man found dead with rope around his neck, NC sheriff says

Under a tree, a man was discovered dead with a rope around his neck; an investigation is still under progress.

A store on Vanco Mill Road, close to Henderson, was where Javion Magee, a 21-year-old Illinoisan, was discovered on September 11.

According to the sheriff’s office, Magee was found near the base of a medium-sized tree, sitting, with a rope around his neck. The tree was fastened using the rope’s opposite end.

Speakeman for the family Candice Matthews said WRAL News that Magee attended Longview High School in Texas and was a delivery truck driver.

The family considers Magee’s death to have been a hate crime, according to Matthews.

“In my opinion, it’s a hate crime because this young man had no indication of suicidal ideation,” said Matthews.

At a press conference on Friday, Vance County sheriff Curtis R. Brame stated that there is evidence that, just prior to his murder, Magee had stopped at a Walmart to pick up a rope. Using GPS data from Magee’s delivery truck, the sheriff’s office is constructing a timeline of events leading up to his demise.

A GoFundMe fundraiser page has been established for Magee’s family.
