Anna Sebastian Perayil Death, Obituary: Anna Sebastian Perayil, a chartered accountant from Kerala, passed away

Tragic events occurred when 26-year-old Anna Sebastian Perayil, a Pune-based employee of Ernst & Young (EY), passed away. Her mother believes that the intense stress of her profession caused her to lose her life. Just four months into her new career, Anna, a chartered accountant, was thrilled with her new position. But soon, the responsibilities of the position caused extreme stress and tiredness.

Anna’s mother, Anita Augustine, wrote to Rajiv Memani, Chairman of EY India, expressing her worries about the intense pressure her daughter faced in her brief position. Anita claimed that Anna would put in a lot of overtime, frequently into the night and on the weekends, and would arrive at her paid guest accommodations exhausted. For someone who was recently hired, in particular, the workload left little time for relaxation or leading a balanced life.

On March 19, 2024, Anna started working at EY. Sadly, on July 20, she went away. Her initial excitement faded throughout this time due to the unrelenting nature of her duties. Anita also brought up concerns about the company’s work culture by mentioning that a number of other team members had quit, claiming comparable issues with overwhelming workloads.

This instance highlights a more general problem with high-pressure work situations and mental health, particularly for newly graduated professionals. It can be difficult to make the shift from academic life to corporate settings, therefore it’s critical that businesses identify and deal with burnout early on.
