6 Children Hurt in Lisbon School Fatal Stabbing, Teen Suspect in Custody

Tuesday’s uncommon act of violence inside a school, in which a 12-year-old boy stabbed and injured six other students, rocked Portugal.

According to Portuguese national police, the victims of the incident at the school in Azambuja, close to Lisbon, ranged in age from 11 to 14.

Azambuja Mayor Silvino Lúcio stated that although a youngster suffered significant injuries from a chest wound, his life is not in jeopardy. The youngster was sent to a Lisbon hospital.

The mayor reported that five girls had minor arm injuries. The police reported that the attacker was in custody. The attack’s motivation was not immediately revealed.

In a message shared on social media platform X, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro denounced the attack and wished the injured youngsters a speedy recovery. Referring to it as a “isolated attack,” he said it was incredibly uncommon in his nation.

Writing in Portuguese, Montenegro stated, “It was an isolated act and a strange occurrence in Portuguese society, but one that should make everyone who works in public space reflect with a sense of responsibility.”
