On Tuesday, Brodrick Earl Kennedy broke into an apartment building on the 700 block of Broadway Commons. He then opened fire, killing his wife, Donielle Lashay Kennedy, 38, and her mother, Shirley Jean Phillips, 58.

When the shooting started, Donillie and Brodrick’s two children were inside the apartment.

On September 17, 2024, just after 8:00 a.m., Garland Police officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the 700 block of Broadway Commons.

Officers arrived to find that the residence’s front door had been forced open.

When police peered inside the flat, they saw two tiny toddlers. Officers approached a bedroom in the back and heard gunfire coming from behind a closed door.

Officers hid right away and started giving orders as they hurried to make sure the kids were safe.

A male suspect—later identified as 35-year-old Brodrick Earl Kennedy—left the bedroom as the police were safeguarding the kids and handed himself in without incident.

When the cops entered the bedroom, they discovered two adult ladies who had been shot. While the other woman was sent to a local hospital where she eventually passed away from her injuries, the first woman was declared dead at the spot.

It was discovered throughout the investigation that Brodrick’s 38-year-old wife, Donillie Lashay Kennedy, was one of the victims. Donillie’s mother, Shirley Jean Phillips, 58, was named as the other victim.

The victims’ families have been informed by detectives, who are also actively looking into the circumstances surrounding this terrible incident.

The two kids who were inside the flat during the gunfire have been securely returned to their relatives.
